TDN: Rye, Vote Now!

by rumdood on May 8, 2009

It was a long time coming, but at last, the mixologists of the Mixoloseum took on Rye Whiskey, and what a night it was. Twenty-two cocktails were proffered for the masses to try, and here are the top five contenders for a bottle of Rittenhouse Bonded provided by Mud Puddle Books.

Monongahela Moon

  • 1.5 100 proof rye
  • 1.5 Cynar
  • 0.75 Licor 43
  • 2 dashes Fee’s cherry bitters

Stir to the light of the moon. Strain into cocktail glass and grate nutmeg over surface of drink.

New Carré

  • 1.5oz Rittenhouse 80
  • 1oz Dolin blanc
  • 0.25oz green chartreuse

Stir while thinking of New Orleans, strain into cocktail glass, and garnish with orange twist.

Apple of Your Rye

  • 1.5 oz bonded rye
  • 0.5 oz Applejack
  • 0.5 oz Apfelkorn
  • 0.25 oz vanilla syrup
  • 1 dash Angostura bitters

Stir with a wistful expression on your face, strain into cocktail glass.

The International

  • 1.5 oz Rye
  • 0.5 oz Cynar
  • 0.5 oz ginger syrup
  • 0.5 oz Lillet
  • 0.5 oz lime
  • ginger beer to top

Put on Casablanca and build over ice in a rocks glass, topping with however much ginger beer suits your fancy.

Japantown

  • 1.5 oz Rittenhouse 100
  • 0.5 oz reposado tequila (Herradura)
  • 0.5 oz orgeat
  • 0.25oz cinnamon syrup
  • scant barspoon maraschino liqueur
  • 2 dashes fee’s Whiskey Barrel Aged bitters
  • lemon or grapefruit twist.

Hard stir, strain, and serve up. I you’re out of orgeat or cinnamon syrup, sub a total of 0.5oz falernum for both

Now, your weekend homework is to give these lovely libations a try and vote for the best! Polls close at midnight, Monday May 11th, so get mixing!

Boooo! East Los Angeles ftw! It’s too weird not to make the list!

But, seriously, good night of mad mixology!

What was the drink with the Domain De Canton? I went out and bought some just to make it, and now twitter is kaput!
